Private-Client Public Relations, Discretion, Not Coverage

Private-client public relations is the discreet management of a principal's or family's engagement with the media, proactive where the client has chosen a public voice, defensive where they haven't. Valorous delivers PR as part of the wider reputation management pillar, not as a standalone agency service. Our work is coordinated with the family's legal counsel where relevant, aware of the Editors' Code and UK defamation law, and designed to protect privacy and legacy rather than generate coverage.

How PR is different

Corporate PR is designed to make a company visible. Celebrity PR is designed to make a person a brand. PR is designed to make a family invisible where they choose to be, and defensible where they cannot avoid attention. The tools overlap, press contacts, briefing, controlled release, but the objective is the reverse.

That means most PR is either proactive shaping of a defined public activity (a business announcement, a foundation launch, a philanthropic milestone) or defensive handling of unwanted attention (a media approach, a planned piece, a story running against the family). Both need to be delivered at the standard the family requires and coordinated with the family's other advisers.

What Valorous delivers

  • Proactive positioning, where a principal has chosen to have a public voice on defined activities, developing the position and the associated communications.
  • Media handling, response to press approaches, briefing journalists on background, negotiating corrections and clarifications, coordinating on-the-record and off-the-record engagement.
  • Announcement management, controlled release of a specific announcement (an appointment, an investment, a family event), coordinated with other advisers.
  • Editorial defence, coordinated response to a planned or running piece, including engagement with the publication's editor, legal counsel and, where warranted, IPSO.
  • Long-form editorial, where a principal has chosen to engage in long-form (a considered profile, a foundation feature), delivering it well.
  • Coordination with other advisers, the family's solicitor, tax adviser, family office and security team.

The UK legal and regulatory frame

PR in the UK sits alongside real law. The Defamation Act 2013 sets the standard for what can be published about a private individual; the Editors' Code of Practice, administered by IPSO, governs how the regulated press must behave. Both are actively used by Valorous when circumstances require. Where a piece is defamatory or in breach of privacy, we coordinate with the family's solicitor to engage the publication directly and, where necessary, escalate.

How Valorous delivers PR

Every mandate begins with a written brief, the client's exposure, the objective (proactive positioning, defensive handling, announcement, editorial defence), the timeline and the deliverable. A named consultant runs the day-to-day; a named director owns the mandate. Retainers and one-off mandates are both structured with defined deliverables and transparent pricing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is private-client PR?
Private-client PR is the discreet management of a principal's or family's engagement with the media, proactive where the client has chosen a public voice, defensive where they haven't. It is distinct from corporate PR (which promotes a company), celebrity PR (which builds a personal brand) and campaigns PR (which generates coverage). Private-client PR is measured by the reduction of unwanted exposure and the successful handling of chosen exposure, not by column inches.
How is PR different from corporate PR?
Corporate PR is designed to make a company visible and drive commercial outcomes; PR is designed to protect the family's privacy and legacy. Corporate PR runs on media relationships and content strategy; PR runs on discretion, controlled response and coordination with legal counsel. The two disciplines use overlapping tools but answer opposite questions, corporate PR asks "how do we get more coverage?"; PR asks "how do we get the right coverage, and less of the wrong?".
Can you handle a press approach on our behalf?
Yes. Where a journalist has approached the family, a member of the family office or a household staff member, Valorous takes the approach on the family's behalf, establishing what the publication is running, what the timing is, what the story is, and what the family's options are. From there we coordinate the response, including whether to comment, on what terms, and with what protection, with the family's solicitor where legal issues are engaged.
Do you work with the family's solicitor and other advisers?
Yes, as a default. PR almost never sits in isolation, most mandates touch legal, commercial, tax or protective issues that require coordination with the family's other advisers. Valorous is comfortable working in that coordinated model, including under legal privilege where a matter is legally sensitive. We do not compete with the family's other advisers; we operate as part of the team.
Can you help me stop a story being published?
Where a story is legally objectionable, defamatory, in breach of privacy, obtained unlawfully, in breach of a confidence, yes, in coordination with the client's solicitor, we can engage the publication to stop it. Where a story is legal and the publication intends to run it, the work becomes about shaping the piece: correcting inaccuracies, ensuring the family's position is represented, and where necessary preparing the family for the coverage.
