Who We Serve
Security for Family Offices
A family office applies institutional discipline to everything it manages. Valorous Group brings that same discipline to the security of the family itself: the residences, the people, the movements and the information that surround a principal. One accountable partner, one written standard, delivered by SIA-licensed close protection professionals and directed by a named Valorous director.
The residence is usually the unmanaged asset
Most family offices govern the portfolio to an exacting standard and leave the household to habit. The evidence now supports what we have long observed in practice: the barrier to properly protected residences is rarely money or technology. It is that nobody has been given the standing to govern the home the way the office governs everything else. Our reading of the research, set out in our note on running the household like the portfolio, is that the gap is one of governance rather than equipment.
The test
Run the household like the portfolio.
How the office runs the capital
- A written policy that every decision is measured against
- Counterparties vetted before a penny moves
- Risk assessed independently, on a cycle, and reported
- One named owner, answerable to the family
- Reviews in the diary, not triggered by a crisis
How most households run security
- Arrangements accumulated by habit, nothing written down
- Contractors and staff checked once, if at all, then never again
- No assessment until after something has happened
- Four or five suppliers, each holding a piece, nobody holding all of it
- Change driven by incidents, salesmen or unease
The left column is why the family prospered. The right column is how the place where the family sleeps is usually run. Our work for family offices is moving the household from one column to the other, without the family feeling the machinery.
Why family resistance is the real barrier
Resistance is rarely a refusal to be safe. It is a reaction to security proposed badly: a list of devices and rules presented without an assessment of what the family actually faces, by a supplier with an interest in the answer, in a way that treats the household as a site rather than a home. A principal who declines that is exercising good judgement, not obstruction.
We come at it from close protection, where the discipline is the opposite: understand the person, the pattern of life and the exposure first, then design the least intrusive posture that meets it. When the family understands its specific exposure, when the measures are proportionate and explained as a whole, and when the people involved are of a calibre the family is content to have around its children and staff, resistance falls away. In our experience the family then becomes the strongest advocate for the arrangement, because it is theirs.
The instrument
The Residence Standard.
One written document that puts the household on the same governed footing as the portfolio. We build it with the office, agree it with the principal in confidence, and then hold every supplier, including ourselves, to it.
Ownership
A named owner of residential risk inside the office, with the authority to commission, decide and hold to account. Until this exists, nothing else holds.
Assessment
An independent assessment of each property and of the family’s exposure, conducted before anything is specified or bought, so that what follows answers facts rather than a sales visit.
The standard
The written standard for each residence: access and keyholding, alarms and cameras, staff vetting and induction, contractor control, and what happens when something goes wrong.
Delivery
One accountable party. Existing suppliers who perform are retained and directed to the standard; missing or underperforming capability we deliver ourselves.
Reporting
The office receives what it would expect of any managed asset: incident logs, attendance records, vetting status and exceptions, reported in the office’s own rhythm.
Review
Reassessment on a fixed cycle and on material change: a move, new staff, building works, a shift in the family’s profile or public exposure. The purpose of the cycle is to make assessment after an incident unnecessary.
Capability
What we deliver for family offices.
- Residential security programmes for principal homes and country estates, from assessment and standard-setting to dedicated residential teams of close protection calibre.
- Close protection for principals and family members, at home, in transit and at engagements, delivered by operators drawn from UK elite formations.
- Security drivers trained to close protection standards, so the journey and the car door are held to the same discipline as the front door.
- Technical surveillance counter measures: TSCM sweeps of residences, offices, vehicles and meeting rooms ahead of sensitive discussions.
- Intelligence and due diligence: discreet intelligence support on people, counterparties and situations that touch the family.
- Security system design: independent design and governance of alarms, CCTV and access control, specified for the family rather than for the installer.
- Exposure assessment: a clear, factual view of how the family and its properties appear to someone studying them, refreshed on a cycle.
- Household staff vetting and induction, contractor control, and the written residence standard that holds it all together.
Discretion
Discretion is a working method, not a promise.
We never name clients, publish case studies that could identify a family, or place our own profile ahead of theirs. Every engagement is directed by a named Valorous director, covered by a mutual non-disclosure agreement from first contact, and staffed by people vetted to BS 7858 as a minimum who sign a mandate specific confidentiality undertaking before first deployment. The people we put inside a household are selected as much for conduct, discretion and presentation as for capability, because inside a private house those qualities are the capability.
