Surveillance Detection
TSCM Bug Sweeps for Homes, Offices, Boardrooms and Vehicles
TSCM, technical surveillance countermeasures, commonly called bug sweeping, is the systematic physical and electronic inspection of a premises, vehicle, aircraft or yacht to identify covert listening devices, hidden cameras, GPS trackers and compromised networks. Valorous delivers TSCM for principals, family offices, boardrooms and family principal residences across the UK and internationally. Sweeps are conducted by trained TSCM specialists using RF spectrum analysers, non-linear junction detectors, thermal imaging and physical inspection, and reported under chain of custody.
What a Valorous TSCM sweep actually includes
- Physical inspection, systematic examination of the space, fixtures, furnishings, electronics, wiring, air handling, ceiling voids and any concealment opportunity.
- RF spectrum analysis, active scanning across the radio-frequency spectrum for transmitting devices, correlated against baseline expected signals.
- Non-linear junction detection (NLJD), a device that identifies electronic components (transmitting or dormant) embedded in walls, furniture or fixtures.
- Thermal imaging, identification of heat signatures consistent with active electronic devices in concealed positions.
- Line inspection, examination of telephone, alarm and network cabling for taps or bridged connections.
- Wireless network inspection, identification of unauthorised devices on the client's Wi-Fi and analysis of network traffic patterns.
- Vehicle sweep, physical and electronic sweep of vehicles, including GPS tracker detection under and inside the chassis.
- Aircraft and yacht sweep, specialist environments requiring adapted tradecraft and equipment.
- Written report, findings, evidence, chain of custody and remediation recommendations.
When clients commission TSCM
- Before a sensitive meeting, boardroom sweep ahead of a transaction, a board meeting, a family council or a legal negotiation.
- On returning from a hostile environment, vehicle, luggage or premises sweep after travel to an environment where hostile technical activity is a real risk.
- After a change of household staff, a residential sweep after a dismissal or departure where trust has been compromised.
- After an incident, where a security incident raises the possibility that technical compromise is present.
- Periodically, as a matter of routine, quarterly or semi-annual sweeps for principals whose profile warrants ongoing hygiene.
- Before a family event, a sweep of the venue before a significant private gathering.
- Post-legal matter, a sweep after a period of adversarial legal action where interception risk is elevated.
Commissioning and fees
No two sweeps are alike. The fee for a TSCM engagement reflects the environment, its size and complexity, the threat profile, the level of discretion required and the timeline. A vehicle, a townhouse, an estate, a boardroom ahead of a transaction and a yacht each ask different questions of the team and of the equipment deployed, and we do not publish a rate card for work of this nature.
What we do commit to is the way the fee is arrived at: a discreet scoping conversation, a clear written proposal with an agreed figure before any work begins, and nothing added afterwards. Where sweeps are commissioned as a periodic programme, the terms reflect that relationship.
The UK legal frame
Planting or using a covert listening device to intercept communications in the UK is a criminal offence. Interception without lawful authority is prohibited under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, and unlawful surveillance more broadly may engage RIPA, computer misuse and data-protection offences. Sweeping your own property or vehicle to identify such devices is the reverse of the interception offence, it is lawful, protective, and often the trigger for further legal action if a device is found.
Valorous conducts sweeps only of premises, vehicles and devices belonging to or lawfully controlled by the client. Where a device is found, the client's solicitor is engaged before any further action.
How Valorous delivers TSCM
Every mandate begins with a discreet scoping call, the space, the concern, the timeline and the deliverable. We agree scope and price in writing, and where the mandate is sensitive we coordinate access covertly so the sweep itself does not signal to a compromising party that suspicion has been raised.
The sweep is conducted by a trained TSCM specialist under a named director. Findings, whether devices are found or not, are documented with photographs, RF traces and physical evidence. If a device is found, the mandate escalates immediately: the client's solicitor is engaged, evidence is preserved under chain of custody, and next steps are coordinated with the wider Valorous protective team.
Client scenarios.
A boardroom before a transaction. Weekly sweep of a family-office boardroom during a live transaction cycle. No devices found across eight weeks; the deal completed with documented technical hygiene.
A residence after a household dismissal. Full sweep of a Belgravia townhouse after a senior staff dismissal on security grounds. Identified a compromised smart-home device that had been installed by the departed staff member outside the specified system; device removed, incident report to the family's solicitor.
A vehicle after a legal matter. Vehicle sweep at the conclusion of a divorce settlement. Two GPS trackers identified under the chassis, extracted under chain of custody, evidence provided to the client's solicitor.
Standards & credentials.
- Specialist TSCM equipment, RF spectrum analysers, non-linear junction detectors, thermal imaging, network analysers, kept current against the threat.
- RIPA 2000 / IPA 2016 boundaries respected, no unlawful interception; sweep activity is lawful protective work.
- UK GDPR / DPA 2018 / ICO compliance for all data captured.
- Chain of custody on any device or evidence recovered.
- ISO 18788 framework for private security operations as a reference.
- NDA-first engagement; discreet access protocols where the sweep must not signal suspicion.
