Physical Protection
Residential & Estate Security for London Homes and Country Estates
Residential and estate security is the coordinated protection of a private property, the family living in it and the household that supports them. Valorous designs and delivers residential security for principal London homes, country estates, and multi-residence portfolios. Our residential security teams are SIA-licensed close protection officers, BS 7858 vetted, integrated with estate CCTV, intruder alarms and access control, and directed by a named Valorous manager who owns the standard on the ground.
What a residential security team actually does
A residential security team, or RST, is a dedicated team of close protection officers assigned to a private property. These are not security guards. They are close protection bodyguards, selected and trained to protect individuals, who bring that calibre and discipline to the home. In practice the RST does five things simultaneously:
The RST is not a set of guards on a rota. It is a small, named team led by a supervisor who reports to a Valorous director, and it is designed to fit the household, not the other way round.
- Access control, deciding who enters the property, verifying deliveries, contractors and visitors, and holding a clean record of who was on site and when.
- Perimeter and internal patrol, physical checks against the estate’s specific vulnerabilities, at intervals designed to be irregular from the outside.
- CCTV and alarm monitoring, actively watching the systems, not just reacting to them, and closing the loop when a sensor triggers.
- Household coordination, working with the principal’s staff (house manager, PA, chef, nannies, chauffeurs, gardeners) so security is a feature of the household, not an obstacle to it.
- Response and incident management, a plan, rehearsed, for what happens if a boundary is breached, an alarm sounds, an approach is made at the gate or a family member calls it in.
Types of residential mandate we deliver
- Live-in residential security, a small team quartered on the estate, with a supervisor and 24/7 coverage.
- Live-out residential security, officers arriving on shift, common in London townhouses without spare accommodation.
- Overnight and weekend cover, where the family holds their own presence in the day and needs a security shift overnight or during a specific period.
- Event cover, surge headcount for a private function, wedding, shoot party or family gathering, coordinated with the house manager and caterer.
- Multi-residence portfolios, a single Valorous management layer covering a London home, a country estate, an overseas villa and any short-lets or transitional properties, so the family sees one security relationship rather than five.
- Empty-property watch, periodic checked patrols and holding of alarm response for a property between family visits.
Integrated estate security systems
A residential team is only as good as the systems around it. Valorous designs residential security as an integrated whole, officers, CCTV, intruder alarms, access control, and, where the profile justifies it, technical surveillance countermeasures.
Where existing systems are already in place we assess them, close the gaps and integrate them with the RST’s operating procedures. Where a new fit-out is needed we design against NPSA guidance and specify partner technologies (Avigilon, Genetec, Milestone, Axis, Paxton, HID, Assa Abloy, Honeywell) that are auditable, GDPR-compatible, and appropriate to a private residence rather than a warehouse. See our [Security Systems](#) pillar for the systems view.
CCTV compliance matters. Non-domestic CCTV in the UK is subject to the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018, requires an ICO data-protection fee, and, where high-risk surveillance is involved, a Data Protection Impact Assessment. Valorous specifies systems and signage that keep principals compliant while still doing what CCTV needs to do.
How Valorous delivers residential security
Every residential mandate begins with a property assessment, a walk-through with a Valorous director covering approach, perimeter, gates, doors, windows, glazing, alarm coverage, camera coverage, blind spots, staff access, delivery routes, kitchen and family-only spaces, panic and safe-room provision, and comms.
From there we write the operational order: number of officers, shift pattern, patrol rhythm, incident tree, gate protocol, visitor procedure, contractor procedure, event protocol, and the interface with household staff. That document is a living asset, reviewed quarterly with the family office and rewritten whenever life changes.
Officers are matched to the household. On long mandates we hold a small named team; family and staff know them by name. The commercial model is transparent, with the cost of delivery and the cost of governance shown separately and agreed in writing before anything begins.
Who holds the post
Residential security is not manned guarding, and we do not staff it from the manned guarding pool. Valorous residential operators are British former military professionals drawn from the elite formations of the Armed Forces, principally the Royal Marines and the Parachute Regiment, who have gone on to work directly for private principals and their families.
That background matters inside a private house. An operator on a residential mandate is not following a patrol card. They are exercising independent judgement at three in the morning, around a family, its children, its staff and its visitors, with nobody else in the room. The people who do that well are selected as much for conduct, discretion and presentation as for capability.
Every operator holds a current front line SIA licence for the role performed, is vetted to BS 7858 as a minimum, and signs a mandate-specific confidentiality undertaking before first deployment. On long mandates we hold a small named team, and the family and household staff know them by name. We price to retain that team, because continuity is the service.
In practice
Client scenarios.
A Mayfair townhouse. A principal moving from a lightly-guarded flat into a full townhouse asked Valorous to design and staff the security from occupation. Two-person overnight team, CCTV and access-control refit specified against Avigilon and Paxton, and a written protocol for contractors, who now sign in through a single point, not the front door.
A country estate in Oxfordshire. An estate with a live-in team the family had inherited from a previous provider. Valorous restructured the rota, reduced total headcount, and integrated the alarm and CCTV systems with the RST’s operating procedures. Response times to boundary alerts halved in the first month.
A three-property portfolio. London, Cotswolds, Riviera. Valorous holds a single management layer across all three, with a named director accountable to the family office. The family sees one security relationship. Costs are reported per property, transparently.
